The Center for Future Consciousness is located on the ascending base of the McDowell Mountains in central Arizona. Most days, a brilliant western sun illuminates a cloudless blue sky above us. At night a vast expanse of a thousand stars sparkle brightly over the hills. The surrounding Sonoran desert, alive with saguaro and cholla cactus and coyote, javelina, and lizards, opens up a few hundred feet to the north. Down below and extending off in the distance to the south is Phoenix and the Valley of the Sun, with its grid of golden lights that glow like a great geometrical constellation in the night and spread to the horizon.

The co-directors and founders of the Center are Tom and Jeanne Lombardo. We are futurists, philosophers, and experienced educators, who are optimists about the possibilities of tomorrow. As soul-mates and intellectual partners, we hike in the desert, work in our garden of cactus and desert flora, and passionately dedicate ourselves to understanding life better, becoming more enlightened and wise, and creating educational programs and writings focused on the enhancement of future consciousness. We also have a network of colleagues – of fellow educators and futurists – who serve on our active advisory board. Center for Future Consciousness

The focus of the Center is future consciousness. Future consciousness is the total set of psychological abilities, processes, and experiences humans use in dealing with the future.

Future consciousness is the key defining quality of the human spirit. It is the engine of civilization, culture, and all of our highest achievements. In this time of great change, challenge, and struggle, the continued development of future consciousness is the most critical ability needed for the survival of humanity and the flourishing of the individual.

The answer to the challenges we face in our lives is the enhancement of future consciousness.

Our Vision for the Center is:

through education, dialogue, and collaboration

Our Philosophy and Educational Approach

The Center for Future Consciousness applies a unique and powerful synthesis of contemporary psychology, educational theory, philosophy, and science to educational programs designed to help individuals and organizations increase their understanding of the future and constructively approach its challenges and possibilities.

As a key theme, the development of character virtues, such as wisdom, optimism, courage and self-responsibility, is tied to the enhancement of future consciousness, personal growth and self-empowerment, mental health and well-being, the evolution of human society, and realizing purpose and meaning in life.

In essence, the Center for Future Consciousness connects an understanding of the future – through a broad and integrative education in trends, theories, and possibilities – with human psychology – our emotions, thoughts, behaviors, and other mental abilities for dealing with the future.

Applying contemporary educational theory in our workshops, we facilitate the deepest and most personal level of learning for all participants.

And combining recent research in the field of positive psychology with a focus on the development of character virtues, we provide participants with strategies for how to create a happier life, now and into the future.
